What Does Paleo Mean?
In relation to a specific diet, the Paleo diet focuses on eating the foods our ancient, Paleolithic ancestors ate. Foods that had to be foraged.
The idea being, that while we have evolved over time, our bodies have not evolved much passed our Paleolithic ancestors. So eating the way did is, in theory, a way to stay healthy.
What Is A Paleo Diet?
The paleo diet focuses on meats, healthy fats and fruits. It is NOT necessarily a low carb diet, though it could be if you use it that way. The only foods not allowed are grains, beans and dairy. Sweeteners are limited pretty much to honey, though some exceptions are sometimes made for maple syrup. (Our ancestors would not have made maple syrup the way we do today, so most paleo eaters avoid it.)
Paleo Vs. Keto
You might be wondering what the difference is between a Paleo diet and a Keto diet. While there will be many overlapping recipes, there are some major differences between the two diets.
Paleo – Only unprocessed foods. No diary, no grains, no beans, and only healthy fats. Limited to maple syrup and honey for sweeteners. Paleo allows for any fruits, which is a major area that is diverges from a Keto eating plan. Keto only allows berries (the lowest carb fruit) in limited amounts.
Keto – Pretty much any type of food goes as long as you limit your carbs and get about 80% fat from your diet. While some folks will focus on whole food keto recipes, this isn’t necessarily the focus of keto. Keto also uses processed sugar alcohols for sweetener that a paleo diet does not.
